OK, in light of what went on in Nebraska a couple days ago, I'm gonna go on a rant.
Suicide is extraordinarily stupid. I mean, you go through all the trouble of writing a note, comtemplating how you intend to do it, debating if you should go quietly or 'out with a bang' (pun fully intended), and you list a bevy of miniscule reasons attempting to justify your actions. And on the top of that, you have to muster up the courage (yes, killing yourself takes courage) to pull it off, not knowing what death brings.
You look at most of these suicide notes and the reaction I get is that almost all of these people have controlled/coerced mental conditions such as depression (completely avoidable, yes it is) or obsessive compulsive disorder. That's pretty much avoidable, uncontrolled neurotic mind states such as schizophrenia are not. Other cause, such as mind-altering substances, are avoidable in principle, but your not necessarily in control afterward, which can lead to unfortunate deaths (see X amount of people in the entertainment industry) With that said, there will always be a suicide rate because not everybody knows what the fuck they are doing.
Which brings me to the idiot who shot up the shopping center this past week. This guy knew what he was doing, and he went through that entire thought process I laid out earlier and decided to carry it out. He had a fully functional brain. He planned it out (a la that idiot who decided to shoot up Virginia Tech, or those 2 clowns who shot up Columbine a while back), he got the equipment and everything. And while the media is blaming this incident in everyone else ranging from Eminem to GTA to the NRA. I'm calling a spade a spade and blaming that idiot who decided to exercise population control and off 9 people, including himself.
Including himself. Himself. Himself. Himself. Himself.
And most of the reasons they outline in their suicide/justification notes they completely contradict when they decide (yes, they DO decide, otherwise it would be either murder or euthanasia) to pull the trigger, or kick the chair from under them, or drink the Kool Aid. Most of these guys feel angry, frustrated, burdensome, morose, and whatnot and when they decide to carry it out, they almost never realize that they conquered most if not all of the reasons outlined in their justification letter. If you got the balls to kill yourself, then you got balls enough to bag the hot chick, to make whatever dream you had come true, to get everything you ever wanted AND more.
Bottom line is this: if your gonna kill yourself, have not just a good reason, but a great reason. Don't kill yourself because your girlfriend dumped you, because your just angry or sad or frustrated, because you feel like your a hindrance. Have a reason that's so good (guilt is an example, though I view that as the cowardly way out) that no one can argue with you, when someone asks "why" have an answer for it, a legit, well though out answer. Don't just say you hate life or your bored because you live in a shitdump like Nebraska or whatever other excuse you have. Say something that would make sense (at least to you) and suicide rates will drop because you'll realize something in mid-sentence and have an epiphany, making you go back into your apartment through your window, or making you take your head out from the noose, or making you put the assault rifle down. And you'll tear up the note, sit on your couch, and watch TV. Or something.
End rant.
