At 9.37pm (Rome Time), His Holiness Pope John Paul II passed away, after a long battle with illness.
I am a Roman Catholic, and although I do not go to church anywhere near as often as I should do, it is a sad day for Catholics everywhere.
Last night, we lost our spiritual and moral leader, and the world will be a sadder place without him in it.
He travelled more that any Pontiff, visting America, Australia, Africa, South America, Israel, as well as becoming the first Pope ever to visit Scotland, and the first Pope to visit England for over 400 years.
He was the only man, in his position to set foot in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral, and held a joint Mass with the then Archbishop of Canterbury, in Canterbury Cathedral, the "home" of the Protestant faith in this country.
He refused to walk away from the job he was in despite many calls for him to do so, and even in his final hours, he had time to send a message to his faithful thanking them for their prayers.
For the first time in 27 years, today, in St. Peters Square, Rome, there will be no Angelus said by the Holy Father. The window he graced, will be empty.
By coincidence I will be at a Mass today, to celebrate my niece's Holy Communion. After the events of the last 24 hours, you would'nt have dragged my away from the nearest Mass I could find.
May the gates of Heaven be wide open, with St Peter, and Our Lord be waiting for you with open arms, Holy Father. You deserve every reward that awaits you in Heaven
Amen
Please leave any thoughts you have here, but I do ask, please, please do not use this thread to mess around. I am pretty broadminded, but not on this subject.
Thanking you in advance
Anthony
