Well, yeah, this is just me laying off about the insane volume of comicbook adaptations that are clogging up cinemas these days. And the fact that it ain't letting up anytime soon.
Of course, we've already had: Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men, Blade, Punisher, Judge Dredd, Hellboy, Daredevil, Hulk, Catwoman, Elektra, and others that I've forgotten. (anyone remember the rest? I'm sure there's more...)
And what does the future hold? Well, accepting that the rumour mill is halfway accurate:
- Fantastic Four; you've probably heard or seen something about it already, and it's destined for a summertime release this year, going head to head with Star Wars Ep3 and...
- Batman Begins; and attempt to revitalise the mighty Bat after the neon-laden, rubber-nippled mauling he took at the hands of Joel Schumacher.
- X-Men 3; supposedly, the first draft of the script is done. However, there's still doubt over whether Halle Berry (Storm) or Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) will accept the task of slipping into the leather outfits again.
- Spider-Man 3; so far off that we don't really know a damn thing about it. Sam Raimi, though, has stated that he's considering this to be the final big-screen outing for the webbed wonderboy.
- Wolverine; Jackman has, in fact, signed up for Wolvey's solo outing, despite his misgivings over the Men Of X. Apparently, he liked the script...with any luck, that wasn't the reason he chose to do Van Helsing.
- Magneto; no, really. A script has been written and brought before the head guys at 20th Century Fox. Supposedly, though, it's about how the uberpowered spoon-bender became chums with Charles Xavier back in the good ol' days, so the chances of Ian McKellen starring are quite slim indeed.
- The Flash; that's the red, speedy bloke from the Justice League, fact-fans. David Goyer, he who wrote Batman Begins, wishes to bring this nitwit (well, he is) to the big screen as well.
- Black Widow; that being a female (natch) KGB agent devised by Marvel. David Hayter, who wrote the scripts for both existing X-Men films, is trying his hand at doing the same job for Miss Romanova as well, it seems.
- The Sub-Mariner; suspend your disbelief, please. The Hollywood outing for Prince Namor, he of the ankle-wings and trident, is scheduled to be written and directed by Chris Columbus (no, I've no idea who the hell that is, wither), and though nothing's confirmed, none other than The Rock is rumoured to be first choice for the task of wearing green Y-fronts all day and holding his breath for a really long time.
- Superman; they've been trying and failing to rejig the Man of Steel for ages. But it's definitely gathering steam now; Dan Harris is writing the script, and Bryan Singer has jumped from the X-Men to this. Bad choice, if you ask me. They've got the leading role chosen too, but...well, I've forgotten who it was. I'd never heard of him before.
- Wonder Woman; cue tears of pain. Targeted fro 2006 release by Warner Bros., who are also trying to persuade Joss Whedon (the guy behind Buffy) to write and direct. I'll commit ritual Hara-Kiri before I even consider watching it, of course...
- Ghost Rider; finally, Nicholas Cage is confirmed for the leading role of Johnny Blaze, circus stunt biker turned spirit o' vengeance by Satan himself. They'd better do a good job of this...please?
- Hellboy 2 & 3; Guillermo Del Toro (hope I spelled that right) wises to make the big red rubber monstrosity's exploits into a trilogy. Personally, I'm excited; the first was awesome, in a bizarre way.
Anyway, rant over. You may now choose to ignore all this, or post your own views on this, or a vaguely related, topic.

I don't think there's anything wrong with adapting comic books. In fact, it's helped some of their popularites vastly.
ADD-ON[/u] I've heard rumors to sequel Daredevil, which I think it good, considering I really enjoyed the first one, despite the hater's of the film opinions.
I've read a lot about the spiderman Trilogy, and I've heard nothing of Raimi saying it's over at 3, as I've heard him mention a fourth and fifth possibility as well. With the introduction of Dr. Conners, it's only natural to have the Lizard, but I expect the final Spider-man to showcase Harry as The Green Goblin, as that is a great way to end it, since that's kind of where it started. They could end it at 3 if they do that, but I hope htey don't. Spider-man 2 is easily the best superhero movie yet, IMO.
I really hope X-men continues with Jackman, and I hope Halle sticks around (though she is less likely too). They can do so much with this trilogy, and the second one was superb, and left room for a third edition perfectly.
Batman Begins will be a huge letdown, as if htey hadn't learned their lesson by now. Sequel's don't work, so let's try a PREquel . . yeah, right.
The single versions of X-Men will take away form the trilogy, IMO. Bad idea!
Superman . . . just let the man of steal go!
Ghost Rider better not eb a dissapoitnment. I have very high-expectiations for this.
Hellboy's sequel's will be lame, and I don't expect a third ot happen. I just can't see them being that good, eventhough the first was great.
I've heard alot of anger directed towards the Fantastic Four,. and I don't know why. Either way, I'm not looking forward to it. --------------------------------------
Granted, I'm not a comic book fan, but I've looked into it since the movies started.
I'm really wanting The Punisher sequel to happen. The first film was great, IMO, and the second one woudl just be better, sicne he ended the first film saying he would "beat up the bad guys", but in more creative words of course. I just hope the y don't screw it up if they decide to do it.

I despise comic books (hopefully RVD doesn't read the site). All of these, Batman/Superman/Cat Woman/Spiderman/Diaper Man shit needs to stay off the big screen.

I don't think there's anything wrong with adapting comic books. In fact, it's helped some of their popularites vastly. Never said it was wrong. It's just that they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel now. I mean, the Sub-Mariner?! Gimme a break! I'd like to see a Daredevil sequel too, but a) the first one's below-average (compared to current Marvel flicks) box office performance isn't encouraging to the studios, and b) Ben Affleck, reportedly, isn't too keen on fitting into the red leather again. Batman Begins is NOT a prequel. True, it deals with the Dark Knight's origin and whatnot, but it completely ignores all existing Bat-flicks (both the Schumacher and the Burton ones), and so is a completely new start for the franchise. Sequels are already planned; expect Two-Face to appear in the sequel, then pasty-faced wacko the Joker to be the villain for numero tres.

The only one I really want to see is Spiderman 3. I'm not a big fan of comic books, so comic book to films are way out of my small interest radar.

I love comic book films. X-Men is the best.
X-men: This was amazing. It stays true to the comic and still managed to change it up. This film is what really started the trend. The sequel beats the first and its one of my favourite films ever. I hope they will make more than 3.
Spiderman: I wasnt too impressed by the first on, in all honesty. I thought it could have been better. It was still good, but X-Men is far superior to it. Spidey 2 on the hand was great, a really good sequel and i love all the hints for Harry turning into the new Green Goblin. I want more than 3, but Tobey Maguire said he doesnt want to do anymore than 3. I really want to see the Lizard, and Venom and maybe Carnage.
Blade: Awsome trilogy. Thrid one lacked a bit, but i still liked it. This one is really good, coz it remains dark, its not all happied up or anything, its has an underground feeling. The fioghts are immense, i love martial art fights, and in Blade 2 when Snipes suplexes some guy, it was cemented in my mind as one of the best comic book adaptations. Snipes is perfect for the role.
Hulk: Was okay, got boring in areas, but it was okay. The fight was shite. The mutant dogs were just stupid and i didnt get why the dad wanted to kill his son. The supposed eye candy was old and ugly. It didnt really stay true to its story.
Daredevil: this was awesome, i don't know why everyone hates it so much. It was really dark and it kept the street vibe. Colin Farrel was really good, Affleck looked fat in the red suit and Kingpin turned black somehow, although he was really good as him. I would love to see a sequel. I havent seen Elektra yet, but i have downloaded it so i'll watch it soon.
Batman: The first one was really good, the second one was okay. the third and fourth sucked. I mean Val Kilmer and George Clooney as Batman? Its like they say to lines and i'm asleep. they're so boring. In the first batman stays away from the cops and pretty much everyone, but in the fourth he is working with them. Whatsupwiththat! Batman Begins will hopefully be good. I'm looking forward to this, coz Batman's actual character is one of the best, definitely the best thing to come out of DC.
Catwoman: Crappest film ever. Nothing good about this. Not even Halle Berry half naked saved this.
Superman: i think this was like the first ever comic book film adaptation. All four were okay. I likes the one with like 3 gad aliens from Krypton, or whatever his home planet was. He's like allergic of his homeland. Imagine if he actually live on Krypton he would breakout in rashes and like die. Superman, will be okay. I'm not the biggest Superman film.
Supergirl: Ha, what a waste of money, they should have done wonder woman, instead of this.
Darkman: I don't remember much about this. It was a bi random. He would like rip of someones hand when he got pissed off and then he a load of bandages would be on his face. it was kinda disturbing. But it was okay.
The Crow: This was pretty cool. The Crow has gotta be the coolest superhero ever. Long hair, painted face, long trench coat and a rocker, can't top that.
Punisher: Was okay, i would sit through a sequel, don't know if i would like it or not though. Kevin Nash sucked. Punisher is pretty cool.
Wolverine: Can't wait to see. My favourite comic book character ever.
Hellboy: This was a weid movie. You either loved it or hated it. I loved it. It was a witty, comical action packed movie. Hellboy is cool coz he is actually a devil. I would love to see 2 & 3. But it got mixed reviews so i don't know if it will happen.
LXG: Big pile of shit.
Van Hellsing: Twas okay. Kate Beckinsale is hot and she wore some nice tight outfits.
Ghost Rider: I hope this will be good, it is one of the "cool" anti hero type films. Nicholas Cage will be good in this role, even though he's kinda small, but he's good at the crazy role.
Judge Dredd: hated it. I didnt understand a word that came out of his mouth.
The submariner: I'm looking forward to this coz i'm a Rock mark and proud of it. I had no idea who the hell the submariner was before. I take it he is like aqua man.
The Flash: Couldnt care less. It will be rubbish. I mean whats he gonna do run around his enemy and hope he gets dizzy and faints. There won't be any good fights, coz he'll get beaten up.
Wonder woman: I'll watch it just to see some hot broad in hotpants.
Fantastic Four: i hate the cartoon series and i think this one will be really bad as well. I mean Mr. Fantastic is such a loser. Dr Doom, hmmmm...... don't know if he'll be good or bad. Imagine if he goes out in the rain, he'll get all rusty.
I think thats about it. I hate how all these productions are digging up useless super heroes, after the success of spidey and X-men. They should just stick to the elite guys.

I want to see Ghost Rider, and Fantastic Four real bad. X-3 will be amazing, Spider-Man 3 will be good also, since the first two were amazing. The Wolverine movie sounds stupid as hell, but he's from Canada, so whatever. Superman movie is just plain stupid, same with Wonderwoman. Flash, now I'd like to see that a lot. They should make a JLA movie, now that's an idea.

I just can't see them being that good, eventhough the first was great. Well I have high expectations for Batman cause they casted Christian Bale (American Psycho, Shaft, Equilibrium) and he's an excellent actor, one of the best in the world I think, he's done action movies and was quite good if I do say so myself (Equilibrium - Great action sequences & gunplay). I think he can really pull it off depending on the screenplay. X-Men, as an avid X-Men fan going back to the early 80s, I can honestly say that both X-Men movies movies sucked major donkey dung. Horrible character development as a whole, Wolverine repeatedly gets his ass whooped by every mutant he fights (he ultimately wins the fights, but he gets the livin Ba-Jesus beat outta him first). The script always sucks, the directing is God-awful and the story is just damned lamed. The only reason this movie sells is because of the few cool characters in the movies. Wolverine was the big shit in part one, Nightcrawler saved part two. But I expect part three to be shit though. Superman, you'll never find anyone half as good as Christopher Reeve (maybe Tom Welling from Smallville, but he looks too young), so let it go. Jackasses. Hellboy. well, um, hmmmm, well, ya see I...., damn. I'm still tryin ta figure out how that bitch came back to life, once somebody tells me that, then I can give you an honest opinion on that movie, but until then, there should be no sequel.

Ooh, Aladdin mentioned some I'd forgotten. Ta muchyness.
Judge Dredd: Argh, split minds. One one hand, I like it quite a bit if I view it as nothing more than an action movie. On the other hand, though, I'm a huge Dredd fan, so I hate it for straying so far from the comics. Badly redesigned outfit, shoddy editing, romance, Dredd smiling for joy (goddammit, he only smiles when someone else is about to endure serious pain!), flying Lawmasters, he spends most of the movie with the helmet off, and he doesn't say "Drokk" even once. Still some good moments ("What is the meaning of life?" ch-chik "It ends!"), but a very, very poor conversion.
LXG: Rubbish. Leave it at that.
The Phantom: I don't think anyone could've made this decent. I mean, an immortal guy who dresses in a purple-spandex Lone Ranger outfit and sits alone in the jungle all his life, guarding silver skulls? It's to his credit that Billy Zane could keep a straight face throughout the movie...but that's about all I'm inclined to give this cack in the way of positives.
Anyway, other points:
- Personally, I get a perverse pleasure from seeing Wolverine get his butt whipped. Never liked him that much, and a lot less ever since Marvel started marketing him as the Be-All-And-End-All of X-Men, which also made my personal fave, Cyclops, look like a retard; since his main character trait seemed to be disagreeing with Wolvey, and since the clawed bastard got so popular, he can't be wrong about anything...Bah.
- The bitch in Hellboy came back to life simply because, if she didn't, Hellboy would've strode right into heaven and started kickin' Saint Peter's arse.
- The Sub-Mariner, Aladdin, is...well, weird. He's the prince of Atlantis, he's certainly not human - in fact, he hates humans - and he's teamed up with Doctor Doom on occasion. So, eh...how he qualifies as a 'hero' is beyond me.
- Oh, and for the record; if they don't make an Iron Man movie, I'll cry.

Do you think the submariner would be good as a film, De'si?
And what did you think of Darkman, The Crow and Supergirl?
Ironman isnt the coolest hero ever, but i like war machine. It'll be interesting to see how the two are represented on the big screen.

Post by Hercules on Feb 3, 2005 4:01:09 GMT 1
Well, rumor has it that Tom Cruise is trying to get the part of Tony Starks. Iron Man, War Machine........ it's the same damn thing.
Sub-Mariner is a hero cause after he was booted from Atlantis as its king, he changed his evil ways and join the Avengers for a short period of time.
The Crow has to be the weirdest movie I've seen in some time, couldn't even watch it all.
Supergirl sucked, don't get me wrong as a young boy, seeing her in that outfit got me quite aroused, but after that, the movie pretty much falls flat. In fact, has there ever been a good super heroine movie?
He-Man, this had to be one of the worst superhero movies I've ever seen. Dolph Lungren was a good pick, but the story, the cast and the movie as a whole sucked ass.
Speaking of Dolph Lundgren, he starred in another horrible superhero movie, The Original Punisher. This was made in the early ninties and had some real shitty action sequences, in fact, I can honestly say that this is the worst superhero movie of all time.

Aladdin: Can't say I've got high hopes for the Sub-Mariner. Movies that spend a lot of time underwater tend to feel sedated and dull for some reason. (presumably because everything looks slow underwater) I've yet to see Supergirl, Darkman or the first Punisher flick. Or The Crow. Yeah, I never saw that. I'm sad. And I jsut like Iron Man because...well, he's all robotic. I like robots. Plus, it'd be interesting to see if they can work his alcoholic trend into the movie somehow.
Herc: Ta for info. I'm not big on Sub-Mariner knowledge.

The movie is Constantine, an adaptation of a comic called Hellblazer, I believe.
And Keanu does indeed suck.

Post by lhw on Feb 4, 2005 18:22:04 GMT 1
They're also using subliminal advertising for Constantine. i.e. While the font is different, all the text is still in the "Matrix green" color.
So, to your unconscious mind, it's Keanu in another Matrix film...thus making you more inclined to go see it.

not just the hulk thou, spiderman, spidermans first love was Gwen Stacey who was blonde so they hire a blonde, dye her hair red and its MJ no jackal or anything, this would have been the best start to the trilogy IMO, also why did they not have the fight in the gym ( flash and peter ) when he forst got his powers etc.
In Xmen there are so many bad points it makes me angry, the girl who walks through walls ( kitty pride ) was one of the first as was bobby drake ( iceman ) along with cyclops, beast ( who is not even in the films ) and warren worthington III ( archangel ) these were all forgotten. They make the dude who turns to metal ( cant spell his name ) into a american yet he is russian, yeah I know this is nitpicking but if you want to take a comic book to the big screen at least do it for the people who week in week out spend money on the comics which gives it populairty in the first
Rant over

To be honest, I didn't notice what nationality Colossus (metal man) was in X2. It's difficult to tell by appearance alone, and he only had one line - and I thought he sounded like Dolph Lundgren. His "I can help" bore eery resemblance to "I must breeeeaaak you."
