had a read of the genuine synopsis of the script currently being developed for x3. it doesn't make for pretty reading. as usual, major spoilers are below. if you don't want to know, then stop reading now.
so true believers, x-men3 goes into production very soon. and i for one am not looking forward to it. there has been a sense of doom about this project from the start. ever since, fox executives made bryan singer wait and wait and wait and wait for a new contract to do this film, then had him escorted by security off the fox lot when he asked too many times about what was happening. so he's gone on to do superman and good luck to him.
so what of x-men3. well the script is in and as soon as it became apparent what was going to happen, matthew vaughan, the new director bailed. a new director came in...wait for it.....brett "rush hour" ratner (i can tell you're overjoyed) so what's happening in this script? the premise is that warren worthington snr develops a cure for the mutant gene and starts injecting it into homo superiors to turn them into good old homo sapiens. so there's no senitels. there's no apocalypse. just another human villain like in x2. one major character falls victim to this "cure". who is it i here you ask? mystique! the only fucking bad guy/girl who could hold a candle to magneto. on the good side, jean grey returns as promised as the dark phoenix and within 20 minutes kills 2 major, and i mean major characters with no build up at all. no bang, all whimper. i thought cyclops was always under used but killing him off within 10 seconds of finding jean grey has eliminated all kinds of exciting possibilites that could have played out. killing professor x though is a major, major, mistake. especially considering that he's hardly given any screen time and his death, like cyclops is more of a whimper than bang. it's not looking good.
well what of wolverine? surely he can save the film? well, no. at the behest of fox studio executives, he's in the middle of a passionate affair with storm who is now the leader of the x-men, and has now just been reduced to a bit part player who stands at her side. so everyone who has been passionate about this series has had their roles marginalised or eliminated before or during the film, while one of the series greatest critics, halle berry gets put centre stage?! new characters include angel and the beast. bit part cameos from gambit, cannonball and in a bane from batman and robin esque role, juggernaut (who isn't involved in anyway to professor x: another ball dropped.)
the whole thing, as a fan of the comics and films pisses me off. all the hard work put into bringing this series alive is going to be pissed away because of studio involvement. 20th century fox dropped the ball with star wars big time. they're gonna repeat the same mistakes here once more. the creative force behind bringing this series to live, namely tom desantos and avi avid need to get hold of this and bring order to it before they lose it forever. all because the suits want to kill off bryan singer's past work.
