OK, I haven't had a chance to get on much lately, so instead of the usual preview, I'll just do a review, and since it is Week 8, I'll also give my non-expert picks on who's going to Hawaii in February (Pro Bowl). Here goes....
Colts d. Panthers 31-7: Make no mistake about it, Indy is in prime form for the big matchup this Sunday against the Patriots, it was pretty much over when Indy scored 3 unanswered TDs to the start the 2nd half. Telling stat: The Carolina D was on the field WAY too long as the Colts offense held the ball for more than 36 minutes, and, for whatever reason, Carolina is undefeated on the road but have yet to win at home this season. Fantasy stud: Colts WR Reggie Wayne, 7 rec. 168 yds., 1 TD
Lions d. Bears 16-7: Over the course of the season the Lions lived and died by the offense. Not so this week as they made Brian Griese look like, well, Brian Griese, who made 4 INTs. Telling stat: The Lions outgained the Bears by more than 100 total yards, and, interestingly enough, lead the league with 20 takeaways this season. Fantasy stud: Lions DEF, 7 PA, 4 INT, 2 sacks.
Steelers d. Bengals 24-13: A late fumble by Bengals RB Kenny Watson sealed it for Pitt as the D contained the explosive Cincy offense, holding Carson and co. to just one TD. Telling stat: This win is Pitt's 7th straight in Cincy, and are 17-1 when RB Willie Parker rushed for 100+ yards. Fantasy studs: Steelers RB Willie Parker, 22 car., 126 yds., 1 TD; Steelers WR Hines Ward, 8 rec., 88 yds., 2 TD.
Giants d. Dolphins 13-10: For a second there I thought the UK fans were gonna be subjected to a bloodbath. Not so, as Londonites at Wembley Stadium were treated to a Miami DE Jason Taylor robot, grass mowed entirely too close to the ground (probably by greenskeepers at St. Andrews Golf Club), and an overall pretty good game in some light rain that featured some great defensive play from both teams. Telling stat: Turnovers and dropped passes, there were lots of them from both sides. How the Giants survived QB Eli Manning's career low 59 yds. passing defies logic. Fantasy stud: Giants RB Brandon Jacobs, 23 car., 131 yds., 0 TD.
Eagles d. Vikings 23-16: Eagles QB Donovan McNabb started looking like himself again, throwing for 333 yds. and 1 TD against a very good Vikings D. Telling stat: Vikings stud rookie of the year RB Adrian Peterson was contained (20 car., 70 yds., 0 TD) by the Eagles D. Fantasy stud: Eagles RB Brian Westbrook, 92 total yds., 2 TDs.
Browns d. Rams 27-20: The Browns had a gut check and responded late with a big comeback from 14 points down, and a late INT by Browns CB Leigh Bodden sealed it. Telling stat: The Browns stopped 2 4th down conversions, 1 with less than 2 minutes left in the game. Fantasy studs: Browns QB Derek Anderson, 18/25, 248 yds., 3 TD; Browns WR Braylon Edwards, 8 rec., 117 yds., 2 TDs.
Titans d. Raiders 13-9. The Raiders lost their 3rd straight game, reintroducing them to the AFC West cellar, thanks to repeated pressure from the Titans D and a late drive stalled by a dropped pass from Raider WR Mike Williams. Telling stat: The Raiders looked dead and gone on offense despite a big advantage in the time of possession department, 4 fumbles and 14 penalties kept the Raiders from getting anything going. Fantasy stud: Titans DEF, 9 PA, 5 sacks, 1 INT, 2 FF.
Bills d. Jets 13-3. Damn, the Jets really need to bench QB Chad Pennington. No offense against a spotty Bills D? And even worse, no rushing attack. Telling stat: The Jets had 3 turnovers, and were held to just 205 total yards by, again, a spotty Bills' D. Fantasy stud: Bills WR Lee Evans, 5 rec., 138 yds,. 1 TD.
Chargers d. Texans 35-10. This one was over early, as the Bolts were hotter than some of the wildfires going on in Southern California, scoring 21 points in the 2nd quarter and living off Houston's mistakes for most of the second half. Telling stat: Chargers QB Philip Rivers was just 7/11 passing, both career lows, yet 3 of those passes went for TDs. Not bad. Fantasy stud: Chargers TE Antonio Gates, 3 rec., 92 yds., 2 TD.
Jaguars d. Buccaneers 24-23. In what turned out to be the week's best game, Jags' S Reggie Nelson picked off Bucs' QB Jeff Garcia with :30 left in the game, ending a late rally by Tampa Bay. Telling stat: Turnovers, Garcia had not had an INT on the season entering the game, but threw 3 in the loss. Fantasy stud: Bucs' WR Joey Galloway, 6 rec., 115 yds., 1 TD.
Patriots d. Redskins, 52-7. The Pats are firing on all cylinders heading into this week against Indy. Can you believe some of the experts actually picked the 'Skins on this one? This was effectively a bloodbath, against a pretty good team no less. Telling stat: The Redskins had 4 turnovers, and the D was out there way too long, 37 minutes against the Pats' offense will wear down any defense, even one as solid as the 'Skins. Pats QB Tom Brady is en fuego, tacking 3 TDs to give him 30 on the year to just 2 INts. Fantasy studs: Pats QB Tom Brady, 29/38, 306 yds., 3 TD. Pats DEF: 7 PA, 3 sacks, 1 INT, 3 FF.
Saints def. 49ers 31-10. The Saints are marching again, with their 3rd straight win after a horrible start, which effectively puts them back in the NFC South race. Telling stat: The Saints scored 24 points in the first half, while the Niners didn't even sniff the red zone until the 3rd quarter. Fantasy stud: Saints QB Drew Brees, 31/39, 336 yds., 4 TDs.
Packers d. Broncos 19-13. Monday Night theatrics were at full force as the Broncos kicked a late FG to force overtime, and in the first play from scrimmage, QB Brett Favre throws an 82-yard game clinching TD to WR Greg Jennings to launch the Pack to 6-1 on the season. Telling stat: The Pack actually found with a rushing attack as RB Ryan Grant had 22 car. for 104 yds. Fantasy stud: WR Greg Jennings, 6 rec., 141 yds., 1 TD.
