Needless to say.... most of my picks didn't hold water last week...Philly got dropped by the Pack, the Raiders' supposedly good D gave up 36 against the Lions, Larry Johnson and the Chiefs looked like practice-squad rejects, and Delhomme kept his job. So what can I say.... on to Week 2:
Sunday:
Colts at Titans: This should be a blowout of epic proportions, yeah, the Titans and RB Chris Brown made themselves look good last week against a dismal Jacksonville team, but if the Colts can stop the high-flying Saints O, the D won't break a sweat until at least the 3rd Quarter. My Pick: Colts. Look for QB P. Manning and RB Addai to have big games again as the Titans are simply outmatched and overpowered by Indy.
Packers at Giants: The way the Giants looked last week on offense, the Pack should be worried, but QB Eli Manning is a game-time decision thanks to a shoulder injury, and RB Brandon Jacobs is slated to be out least a month. The Packers meanwhile pulled one out in a gutty performance last week against the Eagles, but if they hope to pull this out, QB Favre and the offense need to get off their asses. My pick: Packers, the Giants' D isn't close to the Eagles D of last week, so Favre should be able to get something going, it's gonna be a long day in New York if Eli is a no-go.
Bengals at Browns: The bane of Cleveland's NFL existence so far this year has got to be turnovers, which just so happens to be one of Cincy's strongpoints. QB Palmer will look more his normal self: in the pocket, standing upright, and slinging passes to WR Chad "Future Hall of Famer Year 20??" Johnson for touchdowns. My pick: Bengals. It won't be close. I hope Chad's got more than one TD celebration planned, it's entertaining stuff, I tell ya.
Texans at Panthers: Houston's surprisingly solid D won't be getting a reality check this week as the Panthers O is good but not great, which should make for a good game with Defenses taking precedent. The two TD performance from Panthers' WR Drew Carter is also unlikely. My pick: Panthers. Houston has never won 2 consecutive games to start a season, and while it's a distinct possibility here, I don't see it.
Falcons at Jaguars: The Vickless Falcons started a forgettable campaign last week with a forgettable performance from their starter-by-default QB Joey Harrington. I've taken the liberty of getting rid of WR Joe Horn from my fantasy radar as this week in Jacksonville looks even less promising. My pick: Jaguars. Yeah, they didn't look great last week but the Falcons O is so bad that the Jacksonville D could take a bye this week and still win.
Bills at Steelers: This should be an interesting matchup. The Steelers came out looking real good last week, but it was against the dismal Browns. The Bills were supposed to be outmatched last week in Denver, but their D held the Broncos without a TD and lost to a late field goal. My pick: The Steelers. It's gonna be a LOT closer than last week and I might stop watching football if Roethlisberger throws 4 TDs again. The Steelers are at home this week and that's always an advantage for them. It's too bad, as I think the Bills are too good to go 0-2 this year.
Saints at Buccaneers: It would be a shot to the gut if the Saints go 0-2 after reaching the NFC Title game last year, but Indy made the Saints' O look bad last week, and Tampa, if nothing else, brings good D all day, every day. My pick: Saints. Bucs' RB Cadillac Williams is listed as Questionable on the injury report and is likely to be a game-time decision, if he's a no-go, than the Tampa O is a no-go. Seeing a repeat performance from the Saints O is highly unlikely, look for this to be a statement game.
49ers at Rams: Hey, another rivalry game. Sweet stuff. The Niners' O didn't look so hot against a non-existent Arizona D, so they get a chance to redeem themselves this week against a non-existent Rams' D, who let a decent Carolina O put 27 on them last week. My pick: The Rams. Believe it. The 49ers' D didn't play great last week and one should expect more of the same, which means lots of points for Bulger, Jackson, Holt, and the fantasy footballers who own them.
Cowboys at Dolphins: Stupid of me to pick the Dolphins last week.... thankfully, it's a no-brainer this week as Cowboy thoroughbreds QB Romo and WR Terrell Owens made just about every offense look unimpressive last week. My pick: Cowboys. I'm not expecting 45 to be put on a good Miami D, but if Romo looks anything close to the way he did last week, expect at least 250 yards, a couple TDs, and a win.
Vikings at Lions: Hey, the Lions looked good last week, what can I say. And the Vikings beat the Falcons, but that doesn't hold much as Detroit's O looks like they can put up numbers against anyone including what looks to be a good Vikings D'. My pick: Lions. The Impressive O is at home and if they keep QB Kitna upright the Lions will be solid this week. However, Vikings' RB Adrian Peterson could have a huge game as the Lions D has problems against the run.
Seahawks at Cardinals: Arizona did not look good against the Niners last week, and figure to look even worse this week against a solid Seattle D. The Arizona D did manage to contain RB Frank Gore last week, and are gonna be challenged to keep it up this week against RB Shawn Alexander. My pick: Seahawks. The Cardinals may be able to slow down the Seattle O, but that thin D is gonna get exposed by QB Hasselbeck, who will find somebody open in the spotty Arizona secondary.
Raiders at Broncos: It's hard to not pick the Broncos here, as the D got schooled by Detroit last week, and QB Josh McCown (30-40 for 313 yds. and 2 TDs) is listed as Doubtful. That being said, QB Daunte' Culpepper is likely to start against Denver. My pick: Broncos. Oakland's O was surprisingly effective last week, but the Lions O isn't that good. Denver's D, meanwhile is THAT good and a Ball-Control O will wear down the D. Expect Broncos' RB Travis Henry to have another big game.
Chiefs at Bears: Look, if KC's O couldn't get anything going against Houston, expect the Bears to pitch a shutout here. The Bears sport a Top-3 Defense, and should be able to shut out an anemic Chiefs O. My pick: Bears. Look for the D to stack 8 men in the box and give Chiefs' RB Larry Johnson another frustrating afternoon since there looks to be no passing game to speak of in KC. This should be a lock even if QB Rex Grossman doesn't show up.
Jets at Ravens: The Jets looked dismal against a great Pat's D last week, while the Ravens turned to ball over 6 times and beat themselves on Monday Night Football. With that being said, the Jets are going up against quite possibly an even tougher D on the road with starting RB Thomas Jones listed as a game-time decision. The Ravens' O, meanwhile, looks to be just as anemic as ever, but then again, they won a Super Bowl a few years ago with an offense that might have been worse than this one. My pick: Ravens. The Jets are outmanned and short-handed in the running game, and the D will likely make QB Chad Pennington run for his life in much the same way the Pats did last week.
Chargers at Patriots: The marquee matchup is on Sunday Night this week and football fans all over the country are gearing up for this. The Chargers' D looked absolutely ferocious last week as they literally mopped the floor with QB Rex Grossman. The Pats were equally impressive on O as Brady and Moss hooked up 9 times and made the Jets look like practice-squad rejects by dropping 38 on them. It looks like the unstoppable force versus the immovable object in what could be a preview of the AFC Title game. My pick: Patriots. Hate to say it, but if there's a D that can slow down LT, this is it. And if (this is a BIG IF) the New England Front Line can keep QB Tom Brady upright, he'll find Moss as the Chargers' secondary still has no answer for him.
Monday
Redskins at Eagles: Philly needs this one, and I mean they NEED this one. Coming into the season, Philly was one of the picks to go deep in the playoffs, but they lost what should have been a blowout last week and if they lose to a perennial cellar-dweller at home this season may already be over. The Skins last week proved that should be taken seriously as it was WR Antwaan Randle El's coming out party (5 rec. for 162 yards AND he sprung a special teams TD with a block), and came through when it was gut-check time with a game-winning field goal from K Shawn Suisham in OT. My pick: Redskins. They got a heap of momentum with a clutch win last week while McNabb looked rusty in Green Bay. Philly has a solid D so it might come down to Portis and Betts and the rushing attack for Washington.
