Anthony "Da Man" McKenna talking WrestleFever 3 on Sky Sports News
source : Ian Nesbit, Uk Wrestling Journalist
In his first public apperance since leaving P2PW some 18 months or more ago, British wrestling fans were surprised, not only to see the news that WrestleFever 3 will be shown live in the UK on Setanta Sports (PPV £20 ($40) ), but also to see him talking about a possible return to the squared circle.
McKenna was asked about the following and these were his quotes :
Where have you been, and how are you keeping?
I've been at home, spending time being a dad, getting into a better shape mentally, as well as physically. I had some demons, that one day I will talk about. But they are gone now. Gone for good.
Do you watch P2PW shows, and do you miss being in that main event spot you held?
Do I miss being in the ring? I started to about 6 weeks ago. Do I miss being in the main event? I would be lying if I said no. But I made my bed, and I was happy with the decision I made. It wasnt a case of being the right time to walk away, I had no choice. People say I threw my rattle out of the pram, but my life was spiralling out of control.
I'll tell the story briefly, may as well get it out in the open.
It's the usual tale. Boy makes it into pro wrestling, Boy does well, Boy meets women, bar tabs, and drugs on call 24/7. Boy gets addicted to coke and booze. Boy gets a title, Title goes to Boy's head, Boy thinks he's the big shot. Boy takes more coke, turns up to shows late, becomes an ass.
Boy drops title, Boy takes more coke, drinks more. Boy burns out, Company make right decision to give Boy unlimited leave to get straight.
Boy goes home, sees kids, sorts out marriage. Boy still drinks, but doesnt touch drugs, Boy asks to come back, Company say "never say never"
After all this time away, do you think you could still be the impact player you once were?
Maybe. This time round, I just want to work. I'm not here for the massive pay cheque, the women, beer, and drugs. I'm here to have fun. But the place is very different to when I left. I dont know if the new guys, well those that are new to me, will have me back. Then again, when I go to shake the hands of those, I left, I dont know if they will want to shake my hand.
When I was on top, everyone came to shake my hand, now I have to start from the bottom. It's something I've been preparing for, and something I'm more than happy to do.
Will you be attending WrestleFever 3?
I've pulled a trick from my old Outsiders days, and managed to purchase a skybox for the show. I would love Nation and Shinns Theory to be there, for old times sake. But to be honest, Shinns is doing his thing, and Nation is doing his thing. I'm cool with that. I'll take the kids.
If you are given the chance to return, will you take it?
The contract, financially is not an issue. If P2PW want to take a chance on me, then I'll sign on the dotted line
Are you in wrestling condition?
I cant tell you that, it's a state secret *laughs* I'm ready to go. I've dropped some weight, so I'm lighter than when I left. I've hit the ropes, done the weights, I think I'm good. the only proof will be in the schedule
Will you be meeting up with the directors of P2PW while out at the Pay Per View?
I'm trying to book in to see some of the guys, catch up, shoot shit, the usual things. But they have a Pay Per View to prepare for, and it's the biggest night on the company's calendar. I wont be offended if some tell me they are too busy. I held that spot for the first 2 Fever's. They have my total understanding. But I will make a point of catching up with Mick and Cactus. Need to see my old Brit buddies, even if it is for just 5 minutes
Any last words for the British fans of P2PW?
Absolutely, order the show, it's as good as the product you get from New York, if not better. I'm just looking forward to being there as a fan. If anything more were to come of it, that's a bonus
Thoughts
Seeing McKenna on television again actually made me go back to those old matches I have on tape. The wars with Rocky and Stare. I didnt even know he was dealing with those kind of issues. Guess you dont know a guy from his outward apperance eh?
Anyway, he looked good, a bit slimmer than when he left I agree, and the suit was fitted nicely on him. The shaven head has been replaced with a close shave, and the goatee, with a Triple H style beard, but with the Batista bit in the middle. He looked at peace with himself, and genuinely looking forward to the show
I remember the old Outsiders skybox segments and in-show promos. Some of the funnier moments of the old P2PW. Shame they cant all be there. Still, the fact he will attend has only added to my excitement, and if I wasnt ordering the PPV on Setanta before, I will be now.
Any thoughts or comments are welcome, either here or at my website
